Default A Revisit to The Mid Wales Mental Asylum

A few years ago I visited the Mid Wales Mental Asylum in Talgarth, Brecon. The experience has stayed with me ever since and has affected me in ways both good, and bad. The project marked my first real attempt at photography and I recently reviewed my shots reminding myself how far I've come in just a few years. The photographs I took didn't reflect the impression the place had on me so I recently decided to apply some simple effects and masks to try and capture the 'emotion' of the building. Comments and criticisms are all very welcome. Also, I haven't been on here for a long time; if I've flouted any forum rules with this post then I am very sorry.

The first picture I took. Feel a slight sentimentality to this picture.

The front of the admin building.

    The heavy wooden door.

    A side profile view.

A rare example of an almost undamaged room

A retro style armchair sits outside

A blackboard with REDRUM scrawled on it, perhaps the locals or a fellow explorer.

A corridor with small rooms, perhaps cells.

Chairs deliberately arranged in a circle.

    The fabled 'Chair with boots'

    The church opposite admin.

The internals of the church heavily vandalized.

Light pours in through the remarkably undamaged windows.

A corridor seemingly leading to nowhere. I've since forgotten many details of the layout of the buildings.

    The old church hymn board.

    A small empty room.

    The still grand main hall.

The decay of the roof, undoubtably ten times worse since my visit.

A view of the hall from the stage.

    A marble fireplace from admin.

    A wooden fireplace.

One of my favorite photos, an old television set.

An ornate staircase, presumably not for inmates.

A painting, perhaps by a patient.

Another painting. I would like to think it was a patients work.

No idea what this is. Maybe some kind of prosthetic.

    A decaying room.

    Meeting room switchboard.

A hut in the yard, no idea what it's for.

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed them.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed them. Yeah, I heard something about the clock being vandalized. I wasn't aware that it had been completely removed? Do you think the clock mechanism was valuable?

I would imagine it was worth a fair bit as it was old

Interesting set of photos – are these all from your original visit? I had a look around it in 2007, the hall was particularly fine before the roof was stripped of slate…
