Flying From And Intended To Return To RAF Lindholme Near Doncaster, South Yorkshire
The Arcraft Was On A Nightime Training Flight,This Was To Have Been Largely Local Flying.
On The 21st The Aircraft Was Reportedly Heard Flying East In The Area Of Tintwhistle In Low Cloud. Lancaster PA411 Circled The Villages Of Tintwistle And Hadfield For Over An Hour,
Dropping Flares, Before Eventually Crashing Into Tintwistle Knarr.The Aircraft Burst Into Flames And Was More Or Less Consumed By Fire.
One Of The Crewmen Had Survived The Inital Crash And Was Found Alive By The First Local Residents Who Reached The Crash Site But Tragically He Died Shortly Afterwards.
Crash Report Considered Loss Of Position/Orientation To Be Contributing Factor.As State That The Aircraft Was Meant To Remain In The Area Around Lindholme
But Had Strayed Too Far Westwards Without The Pilot Becoming Aware. And He Had Begun His Let Down Procedure When The Aircraft Flew Into The Hill.
All Seven Crew Members Who Died Were Australians. RIP
