I have for years been a Short Wave Radio listener and during the Cold War of the 1980's was always trying to track down radio broadcasts from within the Soviet Union. The most famous was known as the "Russian Woodpecker" which came from a transmitter now known to have eminated from Pripyat in the Ukraine. This ceased transmissions after the Chernobyl disaster. But another transmission only gave out random numbers 24/7, 365 days a year. Its purpose always alluded me! But never the less it fascinated me, and still does. When the CW ended in theory the transmissions should have ended, but not so! Today it still carries on!

There were more spies in Berlin during the CW than many other places around the world according to released documents and even today there seems still be dozens around according to newly released documents.I pick all sorts up of peculiar number stations still when i venture on short wave.I also believe a new CW is starting and I think the old one never really ended just that things became more fluid after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
