Visited with Esposa, Sandman and Tic tac while on Sandman's guided tour to the NE.
History,
The Tyne Cyclist and Pedestrian Tunnel runs under the River Tyne between Howdon and Jarrow, work started in 1947 and was completed in 1951. It consists of two tunnels running in parallel, one for pedestrian use and a larger diameter tunnel for cyclists. Both tunnels are 900 ft in length, and lie 40 ft below the river bed. The tunnels are Grade II listed buildings. The tunnels contain four of the last wooden escalators in the country, most were scrapped after the Kings Cross disaster.
